Just after 12:30 in the afternoon units from Golden Ring (16), Rosedale (280), Fullerton (8), Essex (7) and Middle River Vol (220) were alerted for the report of an apartment fire in the 2000 Block of Kelbourne Rd. While enroute units were notified the BCoPD were on location advising fire visible and occupants attempting to jump from the rear balconies. Battalion Chief 32 advised dispatch to start the working fire profile. Engine 16 arrived to a 2-story garden style apartment with smoke showing and multiple occupants on balconies. A second alarm was requested due to smoke conditions. Engine 8 arrived and covered the hydrant for E16 with T8 taking the rear to occupant removal. Rosedale’s E282 arrived and covered the secondary water source as the crew began to make entry with E16.
Once inside the apartment building one crewmember from E282 located a fire in the hallway, and with the secondary attack line, quickly knocked down all visible fire. Another member from E282 advanced to the top floor with crew from E8 and located and removed an occupant from the building as crewmember from T8 removed occupants from the rear balconies. Additional medic units were called to the scene to treat the rescued occupants and one who had jumped from a balcony prior to the arrival of Fire Department personnel.
Due to the rapid and professional actions by the initial arriving companies the fire was contained and placed under control in short order. There were no injuries reported from fire service personnel and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
